Why You May See This Warning

Many foods and natural products — including coffee, nuts, spices, teas, candies, dried fruits, and other specialty food items — can contain naturally occurring chemicals such as lead or acrylamide. These substances may be present due to growing conditions, processing, roasting, or manufacturing methods.

For example:

• Roasted coffee products may contain acrylamide formed during the roasting process.
• Certain spices, herbs, dried fruits, and natural foods may contain trace amounts of lead or other naturally occurring minerals absorbed from soil and water.

The presence of a Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean a product is unsafe. California’s standards for warnings are often much stricter than federal standards and those used in many other states.
